The cost of Fast Fashion

29th April, 2024

Vestiaire Collective’s 2024 circularity report focuses on the true impact of fashion, and has some interesting data on fast fashion and the benefits of circularity. Keep in mind though that the report itself comes from Vestiaire Collective.

Here are my five key takeaways:

1.

The “cost-per-wear” metric shows that buying preloved is 33% more affordable in the long term than buying new fast fashion. “Cheap” clothing isn’t really that cheap in the long run.

2.

Preloved pieces are worn almost twice as much as fast fashion items and are kept 31% longer. Product longevity is just as important as responsible consumption.

3.

Shopping preloved fashion reportedly reduces your carbon footprint by 90%. Is that enough to have a marked impact on climate change?

4.

60% of fast fashion items end up in landfill within a year of purchase – this really is quite sobering when you think of the volume these guys are churning out.

5.

A significant 88% of Vestiaire Collective users don’t make impulse purchases (at least on Vestiaire Collective). Does this indicate a growing trend toward more conscious buying habits?

But with less disposable income many people are still buying fast fashion. If you can afford pre-loved luxury then it can seem like the logical choice, but short-term affordability is the driving factor for a lot of people at the moment, with environmental impact taking a back seat.
