Big news in the fashion industry today; ex-Gucci designer Alessandro Michele will join Valentino as Creative Director.
I remember reading quite a few articles at the time about his work not being commercial enough, and him being largely blamed for the downturn in sales at Gucci, but thankfully the narrative seems to have shifted now.
De Sarno’s Gucci is arguably more commercial, timeless and sophisticated. But I don’t yet know whether he will make the brand as iconic and memorable as it’s previous incarnations.
The creative geniuses that will be remembered are the ones who explore new concepts, divide options, and evoke conversations. It’s not only about making nice clothes.
That’s why I love Michele’s work and cannot wait to see what he does with Valentino.
